Calling your MP or MSP is an excellent way to raise concern about Rosebank, and to ask them to take action to stop new oil and gas fields.
You don’t need to be an expert, a passion is all that’s needed!
1. Find your MP/MSPs phone number
It would be more powerful if you can call their constituency office instead of their Westminster office.
For MPs: Find out who your MP is here. Sometimes their constituency office phone is listed on the page. If not, it should be listed on their website.
For MSPs: If you live in Scotland you could also phone your MSPs. You will have one constituency MSP and seven regional MSPs. You can find a list of your MSPs and their contact details via parliament.scot/msps.
2. Find out a bit about their current position
Here are some places you can take a look:
3. Call them
When you call your MP/MSP’s constituency number, the call will likely be answered by a staff member, not the MP/MSP. Ask to speak to your MP/MSP, but the caseworker to say this isn’t possible. If you can’t speak to your MP/MSP directly:
- Explain to the caseworker why you are calling and why stopping Rosebank is important to you (see talking points below), and ask them to pass on your message.
- Ask if you can arrange a meeting or phone call with your MP to discuss Rosebank with them personally.
- Thank them for their time, and ask for an email address to follow up on.
Tips
- Stay calm, take your time, and remember - what you have to say is important!
- Be considerate and polite. It’s more effective to build on common ground and the values you share.
- Politicians appreciate their work and commitment to the local area being recognised. Thank them for work they have done on a particular issue or anything positive mentioned in our MP Tracker and MSP Tracker.
- You may be directed to voicemail. If this happens, just leave a message to say why you are calling, why you care about Stop Rosebank, and leave your full name and phone number if possible. ****The MP/MSP’s staff will listen to your voicemail and may call you back.
- You don’t need to be an expert, a passion is all that’s needed! Tell them why you care.
- It’s okay to hang up if the call becomes stressful. Your wellbeing comes first.
