🎉 What happened?

We’ve just heard that we won our court case against the approval of the massive Rosebank oil field, the biggest undeveloped oil field in the UK. This is a monumental victory in the fight for a liveable future for all. The government won’t make a new decision on Rosebank until their oil & gas consultation concludes this spring.

The key to ensuring that the government makes the right decision to stop Rosebank is to demonstrate overwhelming public opposition to this oil field.

Stopping Rosebank would set a powerful precedent and help us bring the end to all new oil and gas. We can finally win the public argument for the need for a rapid energy transition in line with climate science.

Together, we can make this a turning point in the fight against climate change and for a sustainable future.

What the decision means:

• The Scottish Court of Session agreed that the significant emissions caused by burning Rosebank’s oil should have been taken into account during its approval.
• If Equinor and Ithaca still want to develop Rosebank, they would need to resubmit a new application which now accounts for these emissions. The court has ruled that no oil and gas can be extracted until they get a new development consent for the field.
• The Hon Lord Ericht’s ruling states that “The public interest in authorities acting lawfully and the private interest of members of the public in climate change outweigh the private interest of the developers”.
